Early AWN Seller Jamila Khalil Returns to Alt Weekly Industry

We were happy to learn last week that one of AWN’s strongest supporters and earliest network advertising sellers, Jamila Khalil has returned to the alternative weekly newspaper industry as the new Director of Advertising at The Colorado Springs Independent.

JamilaK“I am happy to return to my sales roots in the alt press,” exclaimed Jamila.   “It feels good to work in an industry that takes a meaningful stand and has not succumbed to the sideshow atmosphere that has taken over daily newspapers and broadcast outlets.”

From 2005-2010 Jamila worked for several daily newsapapers (LA Daily News, Anchorage Daily  News, and Fayetteville Observer) but she really cut her teeth on alternative weeklies starting at The Riverfront Times in St. Louis in the 80’s and most of the next decade for Metro Newspapers in San Jose.    It was during her stay at Metro in Silicon Valley that she joined the growing group of national advertising sellers in the alternative weekly industry who fueled the growth of Alternative Weekly Network.

The Colorado Springs Independent was launched in October 1993 by John Weiss and remains the largest locally-owned newspaper reaching 125,000 readers each week in the Pikes Peak Region.    Despite the fact that The Independent is not published in a top market, they have continued to pursue advertising and sponsorship opportunities from various national and regional organizations with a determination seldom seen elsewhere in the AWN cooperative.

Welcome back Jamila!
